Smart Devices and Health

Smart Devices and Health

I forgot my phone at home this weekend while out running errands with my husband. There are always questions that come up while out and about and I noticed that I reached for my phone at least half a dozen times to look something up or check on something else. But then by the time we were driving home, I noticed I was feeling a little free-er by not having my phone. I mentioned this and we started talking about how some people are switching back to “dumb” phones with only phone and text. I have to say – I’m a bit intrigued. Could be a gift option for me in the future.

But how does this help health you ask?
Good question. There have been numerous studies about the harmful effects of constantly being attached to our devices – mental (constant contact, having to be “in the know”) and physical (neck strain, eye strain, poor overall posture, EMF/radiation).

But here is one I particularly enjoyed reading.
Decca Aitkenhead’s experiment and the benefits from getting a group of teens off their phones for a month.

Here are just some of the quotes – and these are from the kids!
Edie used to have a pixie cut “because I’ve always liked looking different. But no one can have any individuality now. So it’s hard to have any sense of who you are. You can’t find yourself.”

“That is how we’ve grown up,” Rose says. “And then people are, like, ‘Why are children having all these mental health problems?’

“Because we’re on our phones,” Edie says. “But we don’t have a choice.”
