Learned This Week – 6/12/24
What is something you have learned this week?
A question I had for myself was this:
Since Akkermansia muciniphila (which is a probiotic strain) is a mucolytic – meaning that it degrades mucus – and we need a good mucosal lining in the gut to protect it and keep keep things running smoothly, why is it used to improve the mucosal lining in the gut?
What I learned is that it is part of the mucus renewal process. It carefully prunes the mucosal layer which allows the gut lining to then create new healthier mucus, thus strengthening it over time. It is beneficial in the normal maintenance of mucosal cellular turnover. However, if there is too much Akkermansia bacteria, it can then gobble up too much of the mucosal layer which can lead to digestive issues and abdominal discomfort. So all things in balance.
